The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
