Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability
The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
